Assessing vignetting of round and Cokin-type filters


Tested filters:
Cokin P-like: 77mm or 72mm adapter ring with Cokin P-like filter holder made in China.
Cokin P-wide: 77mm or 72mm adapter ring with Cokin P-like filter holder, 2 slots cut off.
Hoya Pro1: Hoya Pro1 Digital UV filter, 3mm thick.
Kood IR: Kood Infrared R72 filter, 5mm thick.
Kenko CPL: Kenko PRO1 Digital Wide-Band Circular Polarizer (C-PL), 5mm thick

Note: Some filters seem to bump into the front element of wide angle lenses, see this thread

Lens: Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM, 77mm, from 2007
Values below are at 10mm focal length, f 22, except where indicated.

┬░ Vignetting increases by about 80 pixels from each side when focusing from infinity focus to the closest focus distance (24cm).
Conclusion: the Canon 10-22 can take one to two filters up to about 6-7 mm in thickness at 10mm, hence a slim line Circular Polarizer will work fine (5mm), while discussion threads report that some normal C-PLs will start to vignette. A Cokin-type wide-angle filter can be used fine, although in combination with a 3mm UV filter only from about 12mm focal distance on. Note: I do not have a circular filter insert for the Cokin P holder, therefore, I cannot tell if that would cause vignetting, but based on a forum report, the CPL will due to its thickness. Based on this test, this particular lens is slightly off-center, vignetting more on the right.
Test with a non-slim Heliopan SH-PMC CP shows vignetting.
Hoya UV HMC (5mm) + B+W Slim ND 0.6 (3mm) @10mm, apparent vignetting is around 170 pix (info by Etao).

Lens: Sigma 17-17mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro HSM for Canon, 72mm, from 2007
Values below are at 17mm focal length, f 22.

Vignetting increases by about 45 pixels from each side when focusing from infinity focus to the closest focus distance (20 cm). Conclusion, two round filters such as a 3mm and 5mm work fine. Cokin P-like filter together with a 3mm filter barely works, by itself it should be fine, except maybe when twisted at ~ 30 degrees. Cokin P-like wide angle holder together with a 3mm filter should be fine. Based on this test, this particular lens is slightly off-center, vignetting more on the left.


Lens: Canon EF-S 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS, from 12/2007

Tested filters:
Cokin A: 58mm adapter ring with Cokin A holder.
B+W UV: B+W MRC F-Pro UV filter, 4mm thick.
Hoya Closeup/Stepup: Hoya +2 diopter close-up lens 55mm diameter, 6mm thick, plus 2mm 55-58mm step-up ring.
Values below are at 55mm focal length, and focused to 1.1 m closest diameter.

NOTE: The B+W MRC F-Pro UV filter have a wider rim, it extends an estimated 1mm further inside the filter thread than the Hoya PRO1 Digital UV filters. Hence, B+W F-Pro filters can cause vignetting sooner than Hoya Pro1, not only because of thickness, but also because of rim width.
